Every wholesale order ends with the same small decision: come get it, or have it sent. Retailers within driving distance of a supplier's warehouse have a genuine choice, and making it deliberately — per order, not by habit — saves real money over a year.
When pickup wins
Urgency: a same-day pickup beats any courier. When a cold snap or event has emptied a shelf, driving to the warehouse is the fastest restock that exists.
Bulky-but-cheap goods: shipping cost scales with size and weight; product value doesn't. Big light cartons (think plush, displays) carry shipping fees that pickup deletes entirely.
Seeing before buying more: at the warehouse you can eyeball other stock, check a new item in person, and make the trip do double duty.
When shipping wins
Your time is the scarce resource: an owner-operator's afternoon is worth more than a shipping fee — staffing the store beats driving a van.
